Strenghtening Families

Associates in Counseling & Therapeutic Services offers a full range of mental health services which integrate sound professional practices with individual planning by a multidisciplinary team, including psychological consultation. Our staff are experienced in working with a diverse population of children, adolescents, adults, and families with a wide range of treatment needs.

ACTS philosophy of services respects and utilizes the individual’s strengths of cultural diversity and ability differences, in order to promote maximum individual and family growth. Believing that the family home provides the optimal environment to resolve family issues, ACTS counselors go into the family's home two-three times per week, to work with both parents and children on solving problems that might otherwise lead to the out-of-home placement of a child. Services are typically but not solely in the home and are provided by Master’s level clinicians.

Referrals to ACTS may be made by contacting the In-Home Clinical Director. Children ages 4-20 are appropriate for Services if they are experiencing emotional difficulties, returning from placement, in serious risk of out of home placement and/or home-based services are considered the necessary treatment strategy.

ACTS OF CONCERN

When children are troubled, they generally behave in one of four ways:
  1. Acting Out: Abusive, violent, disruptive, aggressive, cruel behaviors
  2. Withdrawal: Fears, depression, refusing to talk, acting younger than their age
  3. Defensiveness: Lying, cheating, manipulating others, avoiding others
  4. Disorganization: Out of touch, disconnected thinking or irrational behavior

It's sometimes difficult to know for sure when a child is becoming troubled. Here are a few warning signs to watch for: loss of interest in activities and relationships, trouble sleeping, headaches, declining performance in schoolwork and or attendance, aggressive or hurtful behavior, suicidal talk or action, and resistance in complying with rules.
