What Are PCBs?

Most commonly sold under the product name “Aroclor,” polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are man-made mixtures that were once used as lubricants, plasticizers, and heat transfer fluids in electrical equipment and machinery due to their temperature and pressure resistant nature. PCBs have been classified as a probable human carcinogen when exposed, and direct contact can also affect areas of skin, causing chloracne- an uncontrolled episode of blackheads, cists, and blisters.

The use of PCBs was banned in 1979, however many pre-1979 products that contain the chemicals are still in use today.

PCBs are most commonly found in:

  • Waterproof fillers
  • Oil-based paints
  • Electrical equipment and older devices
  • Motor oils
  • Oil for Hydraulic systems
  • Appliances containing PCB capacitors
  • Fluorescent lights
  • Wire insulation
  • Thermal insulation material
  • Adhesives
  • Plastics
  • Carbonless copy paper
  • Floor finish

PCBs can be found in the environment due to spills, improper disposal, and degradation of equipment. Since PCBs are made from oil based chemicals, pollutants tend to bind to soil, sediments, and air particles. The lighter the solution, the farther it can be spread from the original source of contamination. Unfortunately, due to this, PCBs are found as pollutants across the world.

PCB analysis at EHS Laboratories is performed in accordance with EPA method 8082 (Caulk, Paint, Soil, Wipe and Oil) or NIOSH method 5503 (Air)
