What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive gas produced by the natural breakdown of uranium in the ground. The newly produced radon gas can move up in the soil and enter structures above it, including your basement, crawl space, or foundation gaps. Over time, the gas can build up to dangerous levels.

Radon damages the cells in the lining of your lungs, increasing your chances for lung cancer. Exposure to radon immensely influences the risk of lung cancer for smokers and is the number one leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers.

Because it is both colorless and odorless, radon is entirely undetectable unless tested for.

EHS Laboratories offers:

Short-term passive devices that offer a quick and easy way to obtain an initial screening of a home for radon gas.

This device has perforated end caps to allow air to circulate through the mixture and retain any charcoal dust. A polyethylene cap, capable of sealing tightly, prevents the loss of radon gas from the vial. Built-in silica controls moisture accumulation.

For sample collection, the liquid scintillation vial is exposed to an indoor atmosphere, undisturbed, and under controlled conditions for 2-4 days. After exposure, the vial is immediately returned to the laboratory for analysis.
